Photographing sports is not the easiest of tasks, especially when it’s a certain concept, and doubly so underwater! I shot these images with Ash Wootton of the New Zealand National Water Polo Team a few months ago and she was so good to work with, especially when I was asking her to perform feats that aren’t part of the norm as far as Water Polo goes. Massive thanks to Ash for being a part of this campaign! Model: Ash Wootton Makeup: Dominique Whittaker

Hunting and Safety are two words that should go together quite easily, but quite often safety is overlooked as an important part of this popular sport. I’m no hunter, I can’t even track my vehicle down in the carpark successfully, so meeting up with Mike and Dave from Hunter Safety Labs and going on a mock hunt with them was certainly educational. Mike and Dave started HSL a few years back to try and find an elegant solution to the problem of hunters accidentally shooting other people rather than the prey. It’s quite a common problem, and research suggests that even the most experienced hunter will mistake a person for a deer at some time, which given their trained and lightning fast reflexes could result in a fatality. This is where HSL comes in, they’ve designed a system that can tell you in an instant whether you’re pointing your gun…

Shooting with Li Feng Yang was truly inspiring, the man knows how to wear a speedo! Not just that but his ability on the diving board boggled the mind. Spins, turns, twists all at the same time? I felt motion sickness rising as he climbed the ladder for the tenth time to perform the same flawless act of agility. Did I try the board myself after Li had left? Why yes I did. Being the fool hardy thrill seeker I am I took a dive off the platform. It was a perfect 10 right until I started my run up. Can you get a minus score in diving? Many thanks to  Wellington High Performance Aquatics for organising the location, Li for being himself, and my assistants Andy and Pauline for staying dry.

It’s been a time of change for me in the last few weeks, I moved out of the studio I had been renting for the past 9 months and the house I’ve been living in for over 2 years. I miss the studio and it was no easy decision to move on but after some soul searching and some financial wake-up-calling it made sense. I have always flown by the seat of my pants in many ways and my career choices are no different. My previous pursuits have ranged from running a record label, travelling IT freelancer and photo booth operator, and whilst they all had various degrees of success (and failure) I don’t regret any of them for a second. They were ideas I had that would not go away until they were brought to life, and my current incarnation as a professional photographer is no different. My initial…

I got into boxing mid last year and had always admired the gritty black & white shots of the sport that really bring out it’s intimate nature; it really can be a beautiful sport in a most unconventional way. Marc Siou at Maximum Fitness on Tory St needed some new promo shots of the gym for their website to show the types of training he offers and also to show that boxing is not just for guys or an aggressive sport. I’ve been doing it for a while now and am really loving the training and toning side of it rather than the fighting and sparring. It’s a great work out 🙂 I was surprised by how much the women loved it, they were having a great time smacking the crap out of the bags and working up a sweat. Early in June I had the pleasure to work with Josie on a Sports themed shoot in my home town of Gosford, on the Central Coast of NSW in Australia. It was really quite cold and Josie handled it quite well, I kept her running around a bit and we did have to have a coffee break for her to warm up which actually led to chicken pies in the cafe, lifesaver! After the bush location we headed down to the water front and we were treated to a magnificent sunset. After a full day of shooting Josie headed off to thaw out and I jumped in the car and drove down to Sydney…

Lately I’ve had the great pleasure to work with the guys and girls from Fuse Productions, a Wellington based circus and physical theatre company. I met them through the calendar shoots I did for the Wellington Circus Trust, which I will blog about real soon I promise. You can see the images we shot on my portfolio site. One studio shoot we did was for a burlesque show they were doing, which was great fun. We had The Magenta Diamond, Tom Beauchamp and Vinyl Burns getting their sauce on for a thoroughly naughty xmas. The Navigators is a new show by Fuse and it was one of the most rewarding shoots I’ve done so far. The theme was all about travel and discovery, so we set out for some locations around the Wellington south coast and managed to get some amazing images, even if i do say so myself! The…
